Resource 02 · Career conversations

A career conversation that ends in agreed actions, not good intentions.

Most organisations already ask managers to have career conversations. Very few give them an agenda, a question bank, or anything to say when someone asks a question they can't answer.

What's inside

01

A standalone 45-minute agenda, timed section by section, that a manager can follow without preparation beyond one page

02

A question bank of 25 questions grouped by what they are for — opening, exploring direction, testing realism, agreeing action — plus six questions to stop asking, and why

03

Two one-page preparation sheets, one for the employee and one for the manager, ready to send as they are

04

Language for the three hardest moments — "I want your job", "I want to earn more", and "I don't know what I want"

05

What to record and what not to record, and why the distinction matters more than the format

06

A follow-up structure covering what happens between conversations and the first ninety seconds of the next one

Who it's for

Written for HR, L&D and talent leads who need line managers to run career conversations well, without a training budget and without a new system. Every template can be lifted into your own document and used this week. It will suit you less if you are looking for a competency framework, a talent-review process, or a way of ranking people — this pack is deliberately about the conversation itself, and it stops where assessment begins.

How long it takes

Nine pages. Fifteen minutes to read, five to adapt the templates to your own language, and forty-five minutes to run the first conversation. You do not need to finish the pack before using the agenda.

After this, your managers stop opening with "so, where do you see yourself?" and stop hoping the answer is short.

The conversations produce two or three specific actions, written down, that someone checks on before the next one.
