Career Visibility Healthcheck

How NHS England transformed multiple workforce tools and resources into an interactive Technical Services Career Navigator.

The pathways, the role profiles and the competency frameworks had all been developed. The problem was that they lived across more than twenty-five separate spreadsheets and documents.
How NHS England transformed multiple workforce tools and resources into an interactive Technical Services Career Navigator.
The challenge

The challenge

The Infusions and Special Medicines Programme (ISMP) Technical Services Workforce workstream and its national working groups had developed a comprehensive suite of national workforce resources: including career pathways, role profiles, education and training information, competency frameworks and career development tools.

These resources existed across multiple spreadsheets and documents, which made them difficult for learners, employees, managers and educators to navigate and use consistently.

The challenge was not creating the content. It was transforming an extensive body of workforce information into an accessible, engaging and interactive digital format that would help people explore career opportunities and development pathways more easily.

CareerPaths worked with the ISMP workforce workstream to digitise these resources and create an intuitive career navigator that brought everything together in one place.

What we built, in two stages

2020 — the careers website & interactive map

Shabina Azmi led the development of the original careers map for the Careers in Pharmacy website, setting out the routes through pharmacy careers in a form people could follow online rather than in a document.

2026 — the Technical Services Career Navigator

Suzanne Al-Rawi initiated the addition of the technical services section and the Technical Services Career Navigator, funded by the Infusions and Special Medicines programme at NHS England.

The Navigator lets people search job role competencies and tasks — so someone considering a move can see what a role actually requires, rather than guessing from a title. It also lets training providers see where to shape future programmes, because the gaps become visible across the whole structure rather than one role at a time.

The spreadsheet became something you could explore.

What we built

CareerPaths worked with the ISMP workforce workstream to digitise more than 25 national workforce resources and create the Technical Services Career Navigator: an intuitive tool that brought everything together in one place, on the Careers in Pharmacy website.

The Navigator lets people search job role competencies and tasks, so someone considering a move can see what a role actually requires rather than inferring it from a title. It also gives training providers a view of where to shape future programmes, because gaps become visible across the whole structure rather than one role at a time.

The resources were developed to support career development, workforce transformation and standardisation across technical services. Digitising them was what made them usable at that scale.

If this sounds familiar

If your sector has already done the hard work — the pathways, the role profiles, the competency frameworks — and the problem is that nobody can use them in the form they're in, that's a different job from writing them, and it's the one we do.
